From bug to drug

Run time: 16.00 – 17.00

Fungi can be both a help and hinderance to humans and animals the world over. Infections from fungi are becoming an increasing health risk, but the drugs we use to treat them are the same in both humans and farming.

As we use more and more drugs to treat the diseases popping up in our food chains and bodies, fungi are simultaneously developing resistance to them. Once this resistance exists, it makes the drugs less effective. So, we’re forced to make a choice. Do we save humans, or our food?

Fortunately, we might not have to make this decision as Elaine Bignell from the University of Exeter is working on research aiming to combat antifungal drug resistance. Join her to find out more.
