As the 2025 British Science Festival begins in Liverpool, we’re pleased to announce the six projects that we are funding through our annual community grant scheme. This year, we’re working with a range of organisations across the Liverpool City Region to support communities and audiences who face barriers to engaging with science.
Plus One Community Learning CIC
Norris Green, Liverpool
Thursdays from Sept 19, 3–4:30pm (4 weeks)
A series of welcoming, hands-on workshops exploring everyday science in cooking, cleaning, budgeting, and the home. Designed for adults from deprived communities and underrepresented groups, the sessions will build confidence, spark curiosity, and show that science is part of daily life. Participants will learn about food science by growing herbs, exploring nutrition, and trying out fermentation and cooking chemistry. They will discover the science behind cleaning products by making eco-friendly alternatives, and practice maths and problem-solving skills through budgeting, measuring, and planning. Each session will be informal, social, and welcoming, with refreshments and time for conversation, showing how science connects to everyday life.
UK Unplugged CIC
Open Door, Birkenhead
6th & 13th August, 1–2pm
AI and Eyes is an interactive project exploring how artificial intelligence is used in medicine to diagnose diseases from eye scans. Participants will play the confusion matrix game, try to spot AI-generated images from real ones, and explore the principles of data science such as “garbage in, garbage out.” They will also make an eye-themed suncatcher, create a sweet treat, and take home an Unplugged activity box packed with 10 hours of crafts and games. These inclusive sessions support SEND needs and provide a screen-free way for young people to learn about the future of medicine.
Eureka! Science and Discovery
Seacombe & Wirral
Weekly for 5 weeks, Oct/Nov (TBC)
A sensory play programme for new parents and carers with babies from birth to first steps. Blending science with rhythm, music, and movement, the sessions will explore early brain development, bonding, and learning through play. Sessions will be co-created with participants to meet their needs, with time for reflection, reassurance, and community building among new parents.
Women Reach Women CIC
Wavertree, Liverpool
20th September 2025
Matters of the Heart and Brain is a women-led dementia awareness workshop linking heart health to brain health.
