The British Science Festival is less than a month away and we can’t wait for you to join us.
From 10–14 September 2025, the Festival will take over the city in partnership with Liverpool John Moores University and the University of Liverpool.
Expect talks, workshops, drop-in activities and performances popping up in venues across the city centre – from landmarks like The Bluecoat and the Museum of Liverpool, to fantastic spaces including Quirky Quarter, Unity Theatre and Kazimier Garden.
With more than 100 free events on offer, the programme is packed with opportunities to explore science in all its forms.
To help you navigate, we’ve picked out five highlights under one stellar theme: space – perfect for those with their head in the stars.
Discover a universe of creativity and curiosity: watch interactive theatre exploring future lunar colonisation; meet Liverpool’s astrophysicists to answer your burning space questions; and learn to code a robotic telescope to uncover stunning deep-space visuals.
Some events are available for booking, while others are open for drop-ins.
Please check event pages for accessibility information.
Liverpool in space
Space scientists from the University of Liverpool and Liverpool John Moores University reveal the out-of-this-world research happening across the city.
Drop-in and join them to delve into fascinating subjects including microgravity, astrophysics and planetary defence, and discover how new technologies are deepening our understanding of the universe and changing our life on Earth.
(Drop-in Talk – Thursday 11 September – 10:30-14:30)
Cosmic creativity: Coding robotic telescopes
Journey into deep space and explore unanswered questions about deep-space objects in this workshop with the Astrophysics Research Institute.
You’ll find out how to track gamma-ray bursts and supernovae, use specialist software to transform celestial data into stunning visuals, and develop code to direct a 3D printed version of a robotic telescope.
Everyone is welcome and you’ll have plenty of guidance – just bring your curiosity!
(Workshop – Thursday 11 September – 11:00-12:00)
MOONFACE
Shady billionaires plot to colonise the solar system – but the moon has something to say about it. (Workshop – Saturday 13 September – 12:00-17:00)
Voyager at 50: how to talk to aliens
How do you communicate with extraterrestrial being when you don’t share a language? In a talk with Hannah Little from the University of Liverpool we explore the beginnings of human language and what it might teach us about connecting with alien life.
