What’s in our water and should we be worried?

Run time: 11.00 – 12.00
Many of us love a paddle or a bracing wild swim. But is it safe?
Most weeks there seems to be a bad news story about sewage in our seas and rivers. It’s not surprising anxiety about the UK’s water quality is growing.
Join Katie Reilly (University of Birmingham) for an honest but optimistic talk about water pollution and how to tackle it.
Katie will explore why water quality is declining and describe new techniques that are enabling us to monitor it more effectively. She’ll explain how species like Daphnia – a tiny planktonic crustacean also known as a water flea – can alert us to changes in the environment.
Take part in a quiz and contribute to a water map of the UK. There’ll also be water quality tests to try out with samples from bodies of water in Liverpool.
