Universal secrets: Particle detectors

Run time: 12.00 – 17.00
Discover the equipment used to study the smallest particles in the universe.

Researchers from the Department of Physics (University of Liverpool) will showcase real particle detectors, demonstrate how they work and explain how experiments are designed.

Join them to explore ultra-sensitive equipment from around the world; from CERN’s Large Hadron Collider (LHC) to the DarkSide-20k experiment in Italy and beyond.

Zooming in closer to home, you can also join an interactive virtual tour of Boulby Underground Laboratory in Yorkshire, where scientists are searching for the elusive “dark matter” that makes up most of the mass of the universe. The team will run three 30 minute virtual tours in the seminar room on the mezzanine level at 12:15, 13:15 and 15:15. Drop in, booking is not required.

This showcase accompanies the panel discussion- Universal secrets: unpacking particle physics- in the Tung Auditorium 14.00 – 15.30 on Thursday 11 September.
