Transformed by Roman fire: From ashes to art
This workshop runs from 14.00 – 15.30
In the Roman era, a fire destroyed a Southampton pottery warehouse. But what remains today?
Become a detective of the deep and discover the artefacts left buried below, with SeaCity Museum historian Andy Skinner and artist Lucie Smith. Explore ancient objects transformed by the fire. Uncover how modern science and technology is used to find, extract and conserve these hidden treasures. Make your mark with the ancient art of pinch-pot making using clay and natural tools to make marks and impressions in a formed vessel unique to you.
You’ll be surprised by the stories that lie in wait right beneath your feet.
