DNA and Identity: Ethics and emotions in ancestral genetic testing
Run time: 16.30 – 17.30
It’s easier than ever to explore your ancestry at home. But how can we navigate this journey successfully?
This panel discussion will delve into the science, ethics and emotions of at-home DNA testing. Chamion Caballero from The Mixed Museum – a digital-first museum preserving and sharing Britain’s multiracial history – and scientist & genealogist Sophie Kay will explore how we navigate personal journeys into family history.
Chamion and Sophie will talk about their project collaborating with a group of children and descendants of Black GIs and white British women who’ve used DNA testing to trace their African American relatives.
They will be joined on the panel by Arlene Nelson, a member of the group born during World War Two, who will share insights into her personal DNA family search journey. You’re invited to take part in a Q&A reflecting on ancestry, identity, and DNA.
Please note that this event will involve discussions of racism.
