Searching for science’s invisible women
Run time: 13.00 – 14.00
Uncover the women hidden behind the scenes of some of science’s big moments.
Women of the eighteenth and nineteenth centuries saw their fathers, brothers and husbands freely follow careers in science, but were often denied such opportunities themselves. Even when they were able to pursue their scientific interests or assist those of others, women’s contributions were obscured, dismissed or ridiculed, and frequently undocumented – but are being recovered by historians of science.
Excluded from science’s institutions and professions, some women instead found other ways to participate in the world of scientific knowledge, using their poetry and fiction to disseminate and sometimes even challenge new discoveries and theories.
