Gut feeling: How new weight loss drugs work

Run time: 14.30 – 15.30

Originally made to treat Type 2 diabetes, drugs like Ozempic and Mounjaro also cause dramatic weight loss. But how do they work and are they safe? Can they really solve the so-called obesity crisis?

Jonathan Pettitt (University of Aberdeen and The Genetics Society) hosts geneticist Giles Yeo (University of Cambridge) for an interactive talk full of demos that will explore how new drugs are altering our outlook on obesity.

You’ll find out how these medicines work, why they’re so effective and the effects of taking them long term. And we’ll reflect on why people in the UK are mostly buying them privately, rather than accessing them through the NHS.

Please note that this event will involve discussions of obesity and weight loss.
