Fungal galaxies: Journey inside plants

Run time – showing all week

Witness fungi as never before in a photography exhibition that unearths the hidden beauty of the microorganisms living inside plants.

Researcher Diego Dylan Bianchi (Trinity College Dublin) has captured dreamlike imagery of filamentous fungi – also known as moulds – that can be found throughout a plant, from its roots to its seeds. Invisible to the human eye when inside the plant, he’s cultivated and photographed them in the lab.

Diego’s project encourages you to think about the vital yet invisible role fungi play in all our lives – from food to medicine and even construction. Only around 10 per cent of the world’s fungi have been characterised so far. This work is a call to attention for fungi, generally speaking, and for the way we relate to them. Moulds, the very life forms celebrated here, are still so often met with fear, neglect, or aversion. Fungal Galaxies offers the opportunity to pause and reconsider this relationship, inviting all of us to see beyond the surface, to shift our gaze from repulsion to awe, inspiration and curiosity.
