Fighting poverty and stigma to defeat TB
Run time: 12.30 – 13.30
It’s preventable and curable, yet over a million people died from tuberculosis (TB) in 2023.
Combining cutting-edge research with powerful personal testimony, we’ll explore new ways to eradicate this infectious disease.
Tom Wingfield (Liverpool School of Tropical Medicine) will discuss how TB is driven by poverty and hunger, and the stigma, discrimination, and loneliness experienced by people affected by the disease.
He’ll be joined by Fatima Karmadwala, an advocate and TB survivor. They’ll argue why a holistic, person-centered approach is key to tackling TB, rather than a purely biomedical one.
Tom will share research that shows cash transfers, support groups and education packages co-developed with TB-affected communities are as crucial as medical treatment.
You’ll be invited to take part in story-mapping and decision-making exercises and to ask questions during a Q&A.
Please note that this event will involve discussions around medical stigma and discrimination, poverty, and adverse health conditions.
