Colonialism, Race & Health: Visions of Black health and healing

"To understand our healthcare systems, and to understand the racial inequalities that define our societies, we must recognise how the theory of race began and how it continues to be reinforced”. 

In this talk, doctor, academic, activist and writer Annabel Sowemimo will share her widely acclaimed and timely analysis of racial health disparities and the problem of racism in medicine. Annabel is an NHS Consultant in sexual and reproductive health working in South London. She founded the charity the Reproductive Justice Initiative, which aims to address health inequalities and racial disparities. Annabel published her first book Divided: Racism, Medicine and Why We Need to Decolonise Healthcare with the Wellcome Collection in April 2023. 
 Annabel will be joined by a panel of leading academic and practitioners. Dr Leona Vaughn (University of Liverpool) is sociologist with a longstanding professional background in race equality , human rights and developing anticolonial approaches to studies of slavery and unfree labour. Dr Rebecca Loy (National Museums Liverpool) is a sociologist specialising in diversity, equity, inclusion and decolonising museum practice. Stephen Kenny (University of Liverpool) is a Senior Lecturer in 19th and 20th century North American History and has published on slavery, racism, health and medicine.
