Recycled prosthetics
15 September 2022 - 11:00
Queen's Building, Lecture Theatre 1.10, De Montfort University

Event duration: 60 minutes
Plastic waste is still a huge environmental issue across the world. To combat it scientists and engineers are continually finding innovative ways to recycle them.
One exciting example of this is the first-of-its-kind prosthetic limb socket made from recycled plastic bottles, engineered by Farukh Farukh from De Montfort University.
Join him as he takes us through his process of grinding down and spinning the plastic bottles into fibres, which can then be heated together to create a lightweight, affordable material. These properties are already providing life-changing access to prosthetics for those in lower income countries.
