Clean, green technology

15 September 2022 - 12:00

Vijay Patel Building, Fletcher Hub 4.09, De Montfort University

Event duration: 60 minutes

Wind turbines and solar panels are greener energy solutions, but their production requires rare metals such as copper, rare earths, and tellurium.

Mining these materials requires huge amounts of energy and produces a lot of pollution.

Although these technologies still provide a better alternative to the consumption of fossil fuels, finding a more energy-efficient and environmentally-compatible source of metals is a priority.

In the Geology Section Presidential Address, Gawen Jenkin from the University of Leicester, will introduce us to deep eutectic solvents liquids that extract exactly what we need, minimising the impact on the environment.
