Black hole-and-seek

17 September 2022 - 11:00

The Clock Tower & Humberstone Gate, Leicester

This is a drop-in event, running between 11:00-16:30 – there is no need to book.

Even though we’ve successfully imaged black holes, there are still many lurking in space, hidden from even our most powerful telescopes. What happens when a black hole passes in front of a star? Einstein’s Theory of Relativity predicts that their gravity has incredible effects on visible light, bending it like a lens.

Working with citizen scientists on the Zooniverse platform, Adam McMaster has been using Einstein’s theory to look for black holes, and you can find them too! Find out how he’s finding rare types of stars and join him in his quest to identify the black holes and stars that he’s searching for.

This drop-in activity is part of our Saturday City
Centre takeover
